Tales From The Cryptkeeper
Season 1, Episode 1
While The Cat's Away
The Cryptkeeper, dressed like a tropical tourist, is trying to decide where to go for vacation. After giving us a brief slide show of some of his previous getaways, his cab arrives. He decides to tell us a story while he makes his final decision.
Stu Hancott and (reluctantly) his younger brother Dwight decide that the easiest way to get the new Sandslicer dirt bike they've been lusting after is to steal something valuable from the spooky old house belonging to G. Charles Kingman, who is out of town on a trip to Transylvania.
Bats, cobwebs, paintings that come to life, secret passages, creaking staircases, mad scientist laboratories, and monsters of all varieties await them inside.
Stu's devotion to the dirt bike is a little unsettling, going so far as to kiss the picture of it he tore out of a catalog when he needs a little encouragement and diving into a vat full of questionable contents to retrieve it when it is torn from his hands.
It had a very nonsensical meta-ending that was surely designed to blow impressionable young minds. I wish I recalled how I reacted as a youngster.
While the episode itself is nothing spectacular, I can still enjoy it for what it is. The setup is reminiscent of People Under the Stairs, and the all-inclusiveness in regards to things that go bump in the night reminds me of The Monster Squad--two of my favorite "nostalgia films", so surely that helps as well.
