A short while back, I posted a review of an amazing not-so-little tome called "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski. I have read this book time and again, and wondered...what if this book were made into a movie?
Of course, that's bound to never happen. But I found this inspired clip on YouTube, which teases what the opening credits could look like, if nothing else.
I read this book and I couldn't sleep for the ten days it took me to finish it... and I'm not one of get easily scared. I think it affected me because I'm slightly claustrophobic. I just love how it plays with your mind. Anyways, I think this book would be a horrible movie, a movie just wouldn't do it justice.
i think it would be incredibly difficult, to say the least, to make a movie based on this book, and it would take a remarkably gifted and skilled team of people to really translate the many layers of the story into a truly good adaptation. but i do not think it would be impossible.
my sister showed me this book and ive been obsessed ever since. i think making this into a movie would be a complex and time consuming project but it would be amazing to see how it would play out.
For someone to adapt this book into a film, they would have to be on the same creative genious as Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch or Stanley Kubrick. GOD FORBID!!!!, that someone like Joel Schumacher or Michael Bay took a crack at it,they would DESTROY!!! this modern MASTERPIECE.
I really wish this could be made into a movie, but I just don't think anyone could do it the justice it truly deserves. This book is an intricate work of art and should remain on paper so that people use their imaginations to make the movie while they read
I definitely agree that a film based off house of Leaves would never do the novel justice. There are just too many layers of the story to cover within the context of a film. Maybe a television series might make a somewhat respectable effort - to really flesh out all the details and parallel character archs and storylines. It would still be incredibly difficult to present all of the information in a way for the viewer to absorb intelligently. Regardless, I imagine the filming would be a combination of the first person Blair Witch / Paranormal Activity style shooting crossed with an the over the top Christopher Nolan Inception-esque CGI for the morphing mammoth hallways.

ReplyDeleteDamn!!! I am so glad they are doing this movie. Just so everyone knows I totally came up with this idea!
ReplyDeleteActually, Vana...they're NOT making this into a movie. This is just a fan-made video I found on YouTube.

ReplyDeleteI think you couldnt adapt the book itself, tho a blair witch-esqe shakey handcam take on the Navidson Record would be entertaining
ReplyDeleteThey obviously would need to put a lot of CGI work into this movie.. especially the hallway shots are impossible to do without it.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see HoL as a movie, if only to see those morphing and re-arranging dark Hallways.
I was pretty amazed to see that it was a movie, I see now that it isn't but wow,it would be amazing...

ReplyDeleteHouse of Leaves could totally work as a mini-series. Movie? Not so much.
